The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) new rules that combat illegal Internet purchases of prescription drugs that could pose serious health risks to consumers are likely to be “strictly legal” in the U. S. and other countries, officials said Thursday.
The new rules will allow the federal Food and Drug Administration to take enforcement action against Internet sales of the so-called “blue pills” that the agency already has approved, said John R. Clark, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The agency will review the drug’s labeling, which covers the active ingredient, sildenafil, and other ingredients, as well as its side effects. Those drugs are the most common of the many drugs that the FDA has approved for sale, and are used to treat erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, pulmonary arterial hypertension and other conditions.
The FDA has already approved a number of prescription drugs for sexual dysfunction, including Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, which are available as generic versions. The FDA has also approved other medicines for erectile dysfunction.
“It’s very important that these changes put the safety of the elderly and their children at the forefront of the conversation,” said Dr. Steven N. Baum, president of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
“When you’re young, you’re very fortunate to be able to access these drugs and have them available.”
In addition to the new rules, the Food and Drug Administration is reviewing other drugs for the safety and effectiveness of the drugs.
For example, Viagra and Cialis are used to treat erectile dysfunction and are also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, according to the FDA.
“The FDA’s ability to approve these drugs and to assess their safety and effectiveness and determine if they are appropriate for the individual patient is very important,” said Dr. David M. Ebersole, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
“We want to ensure that these drugs are safe for the consumer and that they do not pose serious health risks.”
The FDA has approved Viagra for use in children, but has not approved Cialis for use in children.
Viagra, sold by Pfizer as Revatio, is a newer prescription medicine that was approved for use in children. A study by researchers from Massachusetts’ UMass Medical Center looked at the safety of Viagra in patients who were taking the drug. The results were surprising because Viagra’s side effects were not as severe as those seen with Cialis.
But while Viagra was shown to be an effective treatment for erectile dysfunction, some doctors who were on the Viagra-type medication reported side effects as severe as headaches or flushing of the face.
“The side effects in these patients were very severe, and there was a very bad side effect,” Dr. Michael M. Miller, an internist at Massachusetts General Hospital, said.
“It was hard to know what to do,” he said. “I was very, very embarrassed to talk to people about Viagra.”
Viagra is taken as needed, so there is always a risk of an adverse reaction, said Dr. David S. Ricks, a professor at George Washington University who was not involved in the study.
“It’s very difficult to find a product that is safe,” Ricks said. “When you’re young, you have to have some risk.”
Viagra was the first prescription drug to be approved to treat erectile dysfunction, and the drug’s side effects were severe. In 2005, Viagra was the most prescribed drug in the U. S., with 24 million prescriptions written by men. Doctors prescribed it for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The FDA is also reviewing the possibility that Viagra could cause a blood pressure drop, and it will be tested in patients with heart problems or other heart problems. Viagra also is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Viagra has a side effect of decreased blood flow to the penis. That is a symptom of an underlying problem called priapism.

Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.

“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
